Density SMP for Longer Hair: A Personalized Approach

This client came to me with longer hair, but you could still see areas of his scalp where his hair was thinner. He wasn’t looking for a new hairline or to cut his hair down—he simply wanted SMP underneath his existing hair to create the appearance of more density.

Before we started, he was worried about how it would look, and I explained to him that density SMP with longer hair can work, but every situation is different.

One of the biggest things I look at is whether your hair loss has been stable.

If your hair has been thin for years but hasn’t continued getting noticeably thinner, I may be able to use a darker pigment to create more shading and reduce the contrast between the hair and scalp.

But if your hair is actively getting thinner, I have to think ahead. I may choose a lighter pigment because there’s a possibility that one day you may have to cut your hair lower or even shave it. I want the SMP to still look natural if that day comes.

In this client’s case, his hair had been thin for a while but hadn’t continued getting thinner. After I explained everything to him, he understood the process and trusted me to move forward.

We completed the SMP, and he loved the result.

That’s also something important about how I work: I’m not going to do a procedure just to take your money. If I don’t believe something is right for you, I’ll tell you. I want you to understand what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, and what you can realistically expect.
